The 4 Best AV Receivers for Most People of 2022 Reviews by Wirecutter

There is a very interesting musical development that coincided with the 1970’s receiver power war. That was the emergence of jazz-rock fusion music, often referred to by musical insiders as “high energy” jazz. In almost exact chronological lockstep with the advent of the high-powered receiver came the emergence of high-energy jazz-rock fusion music. For the market of high-fidelity electronics and speakers, that time was the 1970’s. Things came together in such a way that the market flourished and grew like never before. It was a singularly great time for the industry, with all the historic, demographic and technological conditions and advances coming together in a way that will never be repeated.

That said, if you’re willing to invest in the SR8015 as the cornerstone of your home theater, you will be met with an unmatched combination of features and capability. In other words, if you can afford it, the Marantz SR8015 is the absolute best AV receiver solution available today. So I surprised my dad with a Sanyo JCX-2900 receiver on his birthday. The Sanyo 2900 was pretty much a blatant copy of Pioneer’s SX-1050 (120 WPC, silver faceplate, amber back-lit dial, tone control turnovers, etc.), but it was a really good copy. It looked great, it had all the bells and whistles and it performed like a champ. He eventually upgraded several years later and gave the 2900 to a nephew of his, who used it for at least another five years.

A great future-proof receiver for all sources

This is a simple fix as I simply turned down the volume level on the sub itself, something you can't do on other channels with room correction engaged. I did have a couple of handshake issues with HDMI, causing the picture on both TV and DVD to shake, although turning the receiver off and back on eradicated the problem. It's worth noting that this only happened when switching inputs, never when first powering on the unit. They led the way, they established the benchmarks and set the standards.

NEW Sherwood RX-4105 200W AM/FM Stereo Receiver

To say that Trinnov is just another room optimization system would be a gross understatement. It should be the focus point for all your efforts, projectors, sounded open and airy without any harshness. When Dolby Labs and DTS introduced technologies to add a rear center surround channel, movies, but I would have traded that in a second for a decent back light. Kinda late to the dance here steve, but thanks for the trip down memory lane - i was right there with you. Heck, i still run a kenwood ka-7100, a kenwood kx-1030 and a dual all restored - that i've had since 1978, along with a set of later 5012 advents.

We love Dirac Live which will take your sound to an even higher level. Denon AVR-X2800H gets you a more robust amplifier section and a great deal of flexibility in your choices for the immersive height channels. We suggest you read over the home theater receiver features we have listed below to learn more about what to look for, then take a look at our best AVRs for 2023. Article and/or video on what features to look for in a home theater receiver. Sticking with the car chase theme, I decided to cue up the opening of Quantum of Solace on Blu-ray in DTS-HD Master Audio with the Trinnov system fully engaged.

Music to go with High-Powered Receivers

To make the list, the model needed to be pretty simple to set up, have good audio performance for its price range, and be built to last. While I typically begin any receiver test with two-channel music, I couldn't help myself and went straight for The Dark Knight on Blu-ray in Dolby TrueHD. The sound was immersive, cage-rattling actually. I'm really picky about packaging and in this regard, Sherwood didn't disappoint as both the unit and accessories were solidly and intuitively packed. The manual is detailed and fairly straightforward, although there's nothing in there describing the Silicon Optix Reon video processor, which I found odd as it's a notable feature. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't even have known about this feature were it not for the Reviewer's Guide they sent. Anyway, I connected the unit to my Panasonic Blu-ray player and Verizon FIOS DVR via HDMI cables and connected my Squeezebox with an optical cable.

People rarely have perfect listening rooms, and speakers often end up in spots where they are unobtrusive instead of where they sound the best. Room correction helps to improve the overall sound quality by using microphones and built-in software to estimate how your room and speaker placement are distorting the sound and to attempt to compensate for those distortions. HDMI 2.1 is the newest version of the digital connection that all current video-based components use. Other noteworthy enhancements include automatic low-latency mode , eARC (which allows for higher-quality lossless audio over the HDMI Audio Return Channel instead of only compressed formats), variable refresh rate, and quick media switching. That being said, when it’s the hands-down best option on the market for music streaming, it’s incredibly hard to omit from this list.

Still, we had more than enough selections to choose from. That said, it was still pretty cool to watch a few minutes of news in Greenville, South Carolina, then switch to EuroSport News, then to KTV2 in Kuwait, all from the comfort of the couch. Of course, the video wasn’t great and the audio didn’t always match up with the video, but that’s the magic of YouTube.

We were not impressed with its room correction; the automatic speaker setup wasn’t terribly accurate, and the bass in music was lacking impact and detail. As with the STR-DN1080, the room correction in these receivers wasn’t as accurate in detecting our speakers, and Denon’s comparable models were easier to set up. Despite its enhanced construction and other step-up features, the RX-A2A remains remarkably similar to the RX-V6A in features, channel count, power ratings, and other aspects—and as a result, the $200-cheaper RX-V6A is simply a better value. Finally, the Yamaha RX-V385 is the company’s entry-level Bluetooth-only model; the comparably priced Denon AVR-S540BT is easier to set up and use. What truly distinguishes Denon’s receivers from the pack is how easy they are to get up and running. With an on-screen setup system that walks you through the entire process—from connecting speakers to setting up inputs to getting on Wi-Fi to running the room correction—almost anyone should be able to set up the AVR-S750H correctly.

It's a bleeding edge piece of gear, with an expansive feature set, exemplary sound quality and a highly sophisticated room correction system. Put in a movie, set the Trinnov system to Cinema and hear the sound exactly as it was created in the post production facility? Unless you have a massive room and crave virtually unlimited power reserves, this receiver is worth a hard look. I transitioned to this receiver from high-end separates costing four times what the R-972 costs and save for a bit of a drop off in terms of neutrality and dynamic range, didn't mind the transition. It's nice to see a manufacturer attack a segment of the market this vociferously. The R-972 covers every base in terms of cutting edge features and functionality; the only piece of the puzzle that remains for Sherwood is to craft a marketing campaign of equal strength.

I agree with Sam & Gene, in that price range you're better off looking for discounted name brand components from Yamaha, Marantz, Onkyo, etc. The packaging of this product is great to ensure you receiver the right receiver. Besides, the damage cases have not yet been reported because the receiver itself is durable. Everyone who considers a home theater system is new to set up and components at some point.

Yet it still comes in at a price that allows you to put together a very good basic audio system for about $500. This chart shows the level of distortion in each receiver at different output levels and the maximum power each receiver can deliver into 8-ohm loads with both channels driven at 1 kilohertz. The Onkyo TX-8220 had relatively high levels of distortion even at low volume levels. The Cambridge Audio AXR85 and Yamaha R-N303 had moderate levels of distortion, while the Sony STR-DH190 had lower distortion and the highest power output at 1 kHz. For comparison, we also included results for the much more expensive NAD C 316BEE integrated amplifier, which had the lowest levels of distortion but also the lowest power output.
